“Dear Cancer, It’s Me…”

journalingAt the Cancer Support Community, we are celebrating the power of the written word with an Essay Contest!

High school students from the west San Fernando Valley to Santa Maria, California are invited to use the theme “Dear Cancer, It’s Me” to share their experience with their own cancer diagnosis, or that of a loved one or close friend. Prizes include cash and Apple iPad Minis! Click here for contest details.

But you don’t have to be a high school student to use writing as a powerful tool during a life challenge like cancer.

Writing about our experiences can add depth to the way we look at a situation such as cancer,” says Tricia Lethcoe, a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and Program Associate at the Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara.

She adds, “We can’t always change what happens to us, but we can change how we feel about these experiences and the meaning that we give to them.  One way of doing this is through writing. Writing allows us to sift through thoughts and feelings.  It can add clarity to situations that were unclear and can create a new perspective on the experience.  Even just the act of putting thoughts and feelings onto paper can calm and clear the mind.  Writing also allows others a window of insight into what we are experiencing.  Putting an intimate experience onto paper can be a way of sharing and joining with others, allowing them to have some understanding of what we are going through.”

Entries will be accepted until February 18, 2013. For more information, click here
