Support for Young Adults with Cancer

We are pleased to offer a twice-monthly support group specifically for young adults dealing with cancer. The group, for people age 18 to 44, meets on the first and third Monday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30pm at The Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara (CSCVVSB), 530 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village. The group is facilitated by Tricia Lethcoe, LMFT, CATC, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. There is no interview or registration required, but please call (805) 379-4777 before you come, to confirm that the group is meeting.

“This group gives young adults a place to process feelings and provide encouragement for themselves and for others,” says Lethcoe. “They share tips on balancing cancer concerns with the milestone activities that young adults are engaging in such as dating, sexuality, and raising a family. It gives them a place to feel ‘normal’, where their concerns are heard, and where they can share what they have learned with each other.  It gives them hope for the future.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 72,000 young adults in their teens through late 30s are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. Cancer incidence in young adults has increased more than any other group and delayed diagnosis is disproportionately higher in this age group.

A recent Fact Sheet for Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week states, “Young adults with cancer face feelings of profound isolation and are confronted with unique psychosocial concerns such as dating and relationships, fertility preservation, body image, sexuality, education, insurance, employment reintegration, and long term effects of cancer treatment.”

Our young adult support group aims to reduce feelings of isolation and help people regain a sense of control. If you would like to make a donation to help us continue to offer our programs free of charge, please click here.
