Survivor Story: Patricia Cockburn
Many people are aware of the free support groups and other programs available at the Cancer Support Community in Westlake Village. But did you know we also offer an entire slate of free programs in the San Fernando Valley at our satellite location in Winnetka? Programs include support groups for English and Spanish speakers, a bilingual Kids Circle for children with a parent or grandparent with cancer, plus yoga, tai chi, and more.
Porter Ranch resident Patricia Cockburn is one of many people who have benefited from the Winnetka Satellite programs. When Patricia was diagnosed with melanoma, she decided to join one of the support groups offered by the Cancer Support Community. Before her passing last year, Patricia’s mother had attended a CSC support group during her two and half-year battle with cancer. Because of her mother’s positive experience in her group, Patricia did not have any fear about trying a group herself. Recently, she also started going to the yoga classes offered in Winnetka.
Patricia says she likes the connection to other patients that she has found at the Cancer Support Community. “Cancer made me evaluate life more,” she says. “I am grateful for the extra time I have on this earth, and I take one day at a time.” Her advice for a newly-diagnosed person is, “Be positive and ask God to give you strength.” One thing she wishes she had known when she was first diagnosed is, “You are not alone.”
A realtor with 26 years of experience in the industry, Patricia enjoys traveling, playing chess and going to the movies. Thanks for sharing your story, Patricia!
